Il distretto fa parte dell'unità paesaggistica principale della Lüneburger Heide, che presenta un clima subatlantico, situata nella pianura nordoccidentale della Germania. L'area paesaggistica centrale è la "Bacino di Uelzen-Bevens", formatasi durante l'era del ghiaccio saale, circondata da vari crinali morenici. A est si trova ad esempio la "Morenica finale dell'Osthannover", mentre a ovest si estende la serie di morene finali della "Hohe Heide", che raggiunge le montagne di Harburg a sud di Amburgo.
Il distretto confina in senso orario, a partire da nord, con i distretti di Lüneburg e Lüchow-Dannenberg, con il distretto di Salzwedel nell'Altmark e con i distretti di Gifhorn, Celle e Heidekreis.
