Vincent van Gogh e suo fratello Theo sono sepolti nel cimitero di Auvers-sur-Oise. Il 27 luglio 1890, all'età di 37 anni, Van Gogh si ferì al petto con una pistola. Voleva spararsi al cuore, ma commise un errore classico pensando che il cuore fosse all'altezza del capezzolo sinistro. Non vi riuscì a causa di questo e morì per emorragia interna il 29 luglio con Theo al suo fianco. Sei mesi dopo, anche Theo morì. Lasciò dietro di sé un figlio, Vincent Willem, il nonno del famoso cineasta e commentatore Theo van Gogh che sarebbe stato assassinato ad Amsterdam nel 2004 e che sarebbe anch'egli morto per colpa di un proiettile, proprio come il suo famoso parente.
