Il Calvario è situato sulle alture di Château-Chinon e offre uno straordinario panorama sul Morvan.
Si trova in cima alla città, sul sito dell'antico castello distrutto durante le battaglie tra il duca di Borgogna Carlo il Temerario e le truppe di Luigi XI. Le pietre dell'antico castello sono state utilizzate per costruire la Porte Notre Dame nel centro della città. Oggi vi sono erette tre croci di missione. L'originale tavolo di orientamento in pietra di Volvic è stato donato dal Touring Club di Francia nel 1914. Gli attuali tavoli, compreso quello a 360°, sono stati inaugurati nel 2014.
