L'Aquila è un comune italiano di 69 508 abitanti, capoluogo dell'omonima provincia e della regione Abruzzo. Si trova al centro della conca aquilana, lungo il fiume Aterno e alle pendici del Gran Sasso.
La città fu fondata nel 1254 in funzione anti-feudale da 99 castelli, piccoli agglomerati urbani nati in seguito alla caduta dell'Impero romano d'Occidente, che si federarono per costruire una grande città. Distrutta poi da Manfredi di Sicilia, nel 1266 Aquila venne ricostruita come libero comune con Carlo I d'Angiò. Amiternum e Forconium erano le due città anticamente presenti nei dintorni dell'attuale capoluogo che, in seguito alla fondazione di Aquila, persero importanza e decaddero.
