Il paese è ubicato lungo le propaggini orientali del monte Taburno. Fu un borgo fortificato di importanza rilevante nel medioevo , ma in seguito una serie di terremoti segnò il suo declino. Dopo quello del 1980 il centro storico, Tocco vecchio, è stato completamente abbandonato in favore del nuovo abitato in contrada Friuni.
