Vercelli è una città ed un comune italiano di 45 141 abitanti, capoluogo dell'omonima provincia, posto sulla sponda destra del fiume Sesia, nella parte orientale del Piemonte.
Importante nodo stradale, in epoca romana fu conosciuto con il nome di "Vercellae" e venne descritto da Tacito come uno dei "firmissima Municipia" della Transpadana. Dal IV secolo divenne prima diocesi nonché centro di propagazione del cristianesimo in tutta la regione su impulso di Eusebio. Libero comune nel medioevo, fu questo un periodo di grande splendore artistico e culturale per la città, tanto che vi sorse nel 1228 lo Studium, la prima università subalpina.
