Il territorio di Brugnato è situato in un'ampia pianura alluvionale ai piedi della dorsale appenninica ligure, nella parte intermedia del corso del fiume Vara, in prossimità della confluenza dei torrenti Gravegnola e Chicciola.
Le origini del nome sono rintracciabili già nello stemma araldico del comune, nel quale è rappresentato un susino: infatti nelle forme dialettali brigne o brignun si indica propriamente la pianta del susino.
