I terremoti segnano la storia di L'Aquila, poiché la città è situata parzialmente su un antico letto lacustre che amplifica l'attività sismica. Il 6 aprile 2009, alle 01:32 GMT, un terremoto di magnitudo 6.3 ha colpito l'Italia centrale con l'epicentro vicino a L'Aquila. I rapporti iniziali hanno riferito che il terremoto ha causato danni a tra 3.000 e 10.000 edifici a L'Aquila. Diversi edifici sono crollati. 308 persone sono state uccise dal terremoto e circa 1.500 persone sono rimaste ferite. Circa 65.000 persone sono rimaste senza tetto. C'erano molti studenti intrappolati in un dormitorio parzialmente crollato. Il terremoto del 6 aprile è stato avvertito in tutto l'Abruzzo; fino a Roma, in altre parti del Lazio, delle Marche, del Molise, dell'Umbria e della Campania.
