Il lago d'Averno è un lago vulcanico che si trova nel comune di Pozzuoli, precisamente tra la frazione di Lucrino e il sito archeologico di Cuma, nella città metropolitana di Napoli.
Il nome Avernus deriva dal greco άορνος , infatti si narra che tale assenza fosse dovuta al fatto che le acque del lago esalassero dei particolari gas che non permettessero la vita agli uccelli. Secondo la religione greca e poi romana, era un accesso all'Oltretomba, regno del dio Plutone: per tal motivo, gli inferi romani si chiamano anche Averno e non a caso la mitologia lo riconosce come porta dell'oltretomba, nonché come dimora terrestre dell'angelo caduto Lucifero. Il lago di Averno giace all'interno di un cratere vulcanico spento, nato 4.000 anni fa.
