Si ritiene che la porta sia stata costruita tra l'XI e il XIV secolo . La struttura è situata tra due bastioni che erano posti a difesa della città vecchia.
Rappresentava la porta d'ingresso principale al borgo. Il nome deriva dalla sua posizione ad ovest verso la città di Trapani.
Collegato all'antica cinta muraria risalente al periodo punico elimo. È una delle tre porte d'ingresso ancora presenti , ce ne sono altre due lungo il perimetro murario originario: Porta Spada e Porta Carmine. C'è poi una quarta porta , venuta recentemente alla luce: è Porta Castellammare, di cui oggi rimane ben poco. Tuttavia in origine le porte erano cinque. La quinta porta , oggi non più esistente, fu demolita nel 1811 durante la costruzione della strada che collegava il centro urbano di Erice con la città di Trapani.
