L'area naturale sopra e intorno al Bemelerberg è così speciale che la Fondazione Limburgs Landschap ha deciso di proteggerla già nel 1942.
Era ed è ancora l'unico luogo di crescita olandese della norisca di montagna. Questa tradizione continua e anche altre flora e fauna, come orchidee selvatiche e farfalle rare, hanno trovato qui il loro posto.
Nella gestione viene chiesto l'aiuto della pecora del Mergelland. Questa pascola abilmente le colline mantenendo così aperto il paesaggio. Come escursionista puoi godere di panorami spettacolari su prati fioriti e imponenti pareti di calcare con ingressi verso le miniere di calcare.
Questi spazi sotterranei sono nati dall'estrazione di calcare e oggi vengono utilizzati solo dai pipistrelli.
