Il Jonkheer Emile Cartier de Marchiennes, dal quale prende il nome la Cartierheide, si trasferì a metà del 19° secolo nella vicina tenuta di Duyselshof e acquistò un grande pezzo di brughiera dove poteva cacciare. Nei piccoli stagni non c'erano a suo avviso abbastanza anatre, quindi fece scavare un grande bacino - il Pannegoor dove ora tutti quei gabbiani costruiscono i loro nidi. Sulla diga, che fu eretta tra il bacino e la brughiera, crebbero dei giovani betulle. Così il jonker e i suoi amici cacciatori potevano avvicinarsi alle anatre senza essere notati. Il sentiero tortuoso, tra le radici delle betulle, esiste ancora. Questa Pannegoor Passage è uno dei pezzi più belli del percorso.
