Aan de Walpoortstraat nummer 15 kun je een pracht van een neoclassicistische schouwburg bezichtigen. De Minardschouwburg is de oudste Vlaamse theaterzaal die deze stad rijk is.

Louis Minard, architect en zelf van Franse afkomst, vond dat het maar eens gedaan moest zijn met de stiefmoederlijke behandeling van de Nederlandse volkstaal en besloot om op eigen kosten een Vlaamse Schouwburg te bouwen. Hij koos voor zijn project een perceel uit dat aan zijn eigen woonhuis (Grote Huidevettershoek nummer 8) grensde.
