Zoek geen verband tussen Zonnebeke en de zon; in 1072 luidde de dorpsnaam immers Sinnebecche. Na de verwoestende bombardementen van de Eerste Wereldoorlog werd de Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk heropgebouwd en in 1924 ingewijd. De kerk, met een dak van gewapend beton, wordt beschouwd als de eerste moderne kerk in dit land.
In 2004 werd het Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917 geopend, als opvolger van het vroegere Streekmuseum. Als bezoeker word je rondgeleid langs de vijf veldslagen die woedden omheen Ieper. Behalve een uitgebreide collectie foto's zijn er ook historische voorwerpen tentoongesteld en kun je afdalen in een Britse ?dug-out' of een Duitse loopgraaf.
