Oudenburg behoort tot de oudste steden van ons land. De Romeinen bouwden er al in de vierde eeuw een castellum als verdediging tegen de invallende Saksische zeerovers. Toen grensde de grillige kustlijn nog aan de zoom van de latere stad. De vierkante structuur van dit fort tekent zich nog duidelijk af in de huidige dorpskern. Ook tijdens de Middeleeuwen speelde Oudenburg een niet onaardige rol in Vlaanderen. In dit kader vermelden we de stichting, omstreeks 1084, van de Sint-Pietersabdij. Op het gebied van de lakennijverheid behoorde Oudenburg tot de voornaamste nederzettingen in Vlaanderen. Het is een stad met een eeuwenoud verleden, waaraan nog ettelijke monumenten herinneren.
