De vesting Zandvliet is allang verdwenen en in de loop der tijden omgebouwd tot het charmante dorpje dat we vandaag kennen.
Toch zijn er nog heel wat stille getuigen van de Spaanse overheersing. Zo ontwaren we vandaag nog de zevenpuntige ster in het stratenplan van Zandvliet, de overblijfselen van de verdedigingswallen rondom het dorp.
Ook heel wat straatnamen herinneren aan deze woelige tijden: de Zuidvest, de Noordvest en ook de Conterscherp, waar we momenteel wandelen.
De naam Conterscherp is afgeleid van het Franse "Contr'escarpe", een verwijzing naar de steile buitenhellingen van de voormalige vestingracht. (escarpe=binnentalud)
