Het Franse departement Samber en Maas werd in 1815, de Nederlandse provincie Namen. Het zuidwestelijk deel van de huidige Belgische provincie Namen, rond Philippeville, lag oorspronkelijk in het departement Ardennes, maar werd na de nederlaag van Napoleon bij het Verenigd Koninkrijk der Nederlanden gevoegd. De provincie bleef na de Belgische afscheuring in 1830 onveranderd voortbestaan.
