Léglise is in zijn huidige vorm ontstaan op 1 januari 1977 uit de fusie van 5 gemeenten, op hun beurt onderverdeeld in 28 dorpen en gehuchten, die voorheen elk hun eigen karakter en gewoonten hadden. Van de voormalige gemeente Anlier, , werd bij de fusie ook het gehucht Louftémont aangehecht. De gemeente telt ruim 5.000 inwoners en is met slechts 30 inwoners per km² een van de dunst bevolkte gemeenten van België. Léglise wordt doorsneden door en heeft een aansluiting op de autosnelweg E25/E411.
