Wommelgem is een plaats en gemeente in de provincie Antwerpen. De gemeente ligt in het Schijnbekken en telt 13.018 inwoners. Binnen de gemeentegrenzen liggen geen andere kernen.De naam Wommelgem kan via de dialectische vorm Oemmelegoem terug gevoerd worden tot de benaming Wimilincheim. Deze benaming wijst erop dat Wommelgem ontstaan is uit een Frankische nederzetting die rondom de 6e en de 7e eeuw ontstaan is. De naam Wommelgem kan in twee delen worden opgesplitst: Wommel + gem.
