NL : De haagbeuk is een traag groeiende boom die zich ook uitstekend laat snoeien als haagplant. Uitgegroeide bomen hebben een prachtige tekening op hun gladde schors. Het hout is wit, hard, taai en gedraaid. Het splijt niet en is schokvast. Het werd gebruikt om schaven, hamers, stelen en wielen mee te maken. Het is uitstekend brandhout en levert een goede houtskool.
FR : Le charme est un arbre à croissance lente. Il se laisse parfaitement tailler en haie. Les arbres adultes présentent un beau dessin sur leur écorce lisse. Le bois est blanc, dur et résistant. Il ne se fend pas et résiste aux chocs. Il a été employé pour fabriquer des rabots, des marteaux, des manches et des roues. C'est un excellent bois de chauffage et il donne un charbon de bonne qualité.
