Middenvijver is het grootste open groengebied in Antwerpen. Het is één van de laatste delen van Linkeroever die opgehoogd werden. Op het eerste zicht lijkt het een enorme monotone grasvlakte, maar wie de tijd neemt om het gebied te doorkruisen ontdekt meer. Het terrein is niet perfect vlak maar heeft nog een uitgesproken microreliëf met duinachtige ophogingen. Vooral de randen van het gebied zijn droog en hebben zich ontwikkeld tot duinrietgrasland waarin o.a. duinsterretje voorkomt. Centraal is nog een natte zone aanwezig met grasland en een wilgen-berkenbosje.
