Na het Belgisch-Italiaanse migratieakkoord van 1946, waarin Italië Belgische steenkool kreeg in ruil voor de mogelijkheid om arbeiders naar België te sturen, arriveerden alleen al in de streek van Charleroi op het hoogtepunt van die migratie om en bij de dertigduizend Italianen. Na de sluiting van de Waalse steenkoolmijnen is vermoedelijk slechts 20 procent van hen naar hun land van herkomst teruggekeerd.
