Zicht op de we waterburcht van Wijnendale en zijn donjon of meestertoren.
In 1085 bouwde de Vlaamse graaf Robrecht de Fries er een houten sterkte. Gwijde van Dampierre bekend van de Guldensporenslag verbouwde die in steen. Dan volgden periodes van luister en verval. Slechts drie torens bij de ophaalbrug overleefden de door Napoleon bevolen sloop.
In 1833 kocht de Brusselse bankiersfamilie Mathieu het bos en de kasteelruïnes en liet het huidige kasteel bouwen. In de vroege morgen van 25 mei 1940 greep er een dramatische confrontatie plaats tussen Leopold III en zijn ministers. Of het begin van wat later de Koningskwestie zou worden.
