Ons landschap in Vlaanderen is veel opener geworden, omdat traditionele hagen, houtkanten en bomenrijen in grote mate verdwenen ziijn. Alle hagen, houtkanten en bomenrijen van de Ferrariskaart zijn samen bijna 130.000 km lang. Wilde je dus in 1778 in onze streken een tocht langs hagen, houtkanten en bomenrijen ondernemen, dan zou je drie keer rond de aarde hebben moeten lopen. In Vlaanderen stonden meer bomen buiten het bos dan erin.
