Rond de met kasseien geplaveide Marktplatz en in de Tidexerstraße staan opmerkelijke gotische en renaissancistische vakwerkhuizen. Twee markante gebouwen op het marktplein zijn opgedragen aan de bekende schelm van de stad, Tijl Uilenspiegel. Volgens een legende werkte hij in een brouwerij - daar is inderdaad veel kans toe - en de componist Richard Strauss zette zijn belevenissen op muziek, in het symfonische gedicht Till Eulenspiegel.
