De Faeröer zijn een verzameling van achttien vulkanische eilanden precies in het midden van de driehoek IJsland, Noorwegen en Groot-Brittannië. Eender waar in de Faeröer ben je nooit verder dan 5 kilometer van de oceaan verwijderd. Voor de 50.000 inwoners, van wie 40 procent in de hoofdstad Toshavn woont, zijn er in totaal maar drie verkeerslichten. De schapen zijn met 70.000, dus aan wol is er geen gebrek. Actrice Sofie Gråbøl alias Sarah Lund in The Killing werd een uithangbord door Faeröers bekendste exportproduct te dragen: wollen sweaters. ‘Faeröer’ is trouwens een oud Noors woord en betekent ‘schapeneiland’.
