Lunéville is de geboorteplaats van de beroemde cartograaf Joseph François Ferraris. Meer specifiek werd hij geboren aan het Lotharingse hof in Lunéville. Hij was weliswaar van adellijke komaf, maar niet de oudste zoon en had dus geen recht op de erfgronden. Ferraris wachtte het haast nomadische bestaan waartoe duizenden edellieden in het achttiende-eeuwse Europa veroordeeld waren. De jonkers zonder erftitel moesten proberen naam te maken voor zichzelf. En dat deed hij zeker.
Zijn Keizerin Maria Theresia was niet vies van een beetje oorlog. Na een zoveelste verloren oorlog vond ze dat de oplossing niet school in nog meer wapengekletter, maar in betere kaarten, wat Ferraris kon beamen. Al te vaak hadden de Oostenrijkse legers zich in een hinderlaag gemanoeuvreerd omdat ze het terrein niet kenden.
