Het park van de Duke van Bedford rondom Woburn Abbey speelde een essentiële rol in het overleven van het Pater-Davidshert. Dat hert komt oorspronkelijk uit China en kon daar enkel overleven dankzij de bescherming van de keizer. Maar toen die bescherming tijdens een revolutie, de Bokseropstand in 1900, wegviel werden al deze herten gedood in China. Gelukkig hadden de Chinezen ooit een schenking gedaan van enkele herten aan Engeland. De hertog van Bedford verzamelde de 16 Europese dieren hier om een kudde op te bouwen en zo de soort voor het nageslacht te behouden. In 1985 werd het hert opnieuw in het wild geïntroduceerd in het Peking Milu Park.
