Professor Colin Maclaurin kreeg in 1744 een merkwaardige vraag van twee Presbyteriaanse priesters die met een statistisch vraagstuk worstelden: Alexander Webster en Robert Wallace. Ze wilden inschatten hoeveel priesters er zouden sterven per jaar. Dat cijfer hadden ze nodig omdat ze een pensioenfonds wilden opzetten voor de weduwes van hun priesters en omdat ze wilden bepalen hoeveel bijdrage er moest betaald worden per persoon per jaar. Dit werd de basis van een nieuwe tak in de wiskunde: statistiek. Volgens hun berekening zou er in 1765 58.348 pond in hun fonds moeten zitten. Op 1 pond na waren ze exact juist.
