De Engelsen houden er enkele rare tradities op na. Zo hebben ze het spel "Ferret-legging". "Ferret-legging" was een uithoudingstest waarbij fretten in de broek van de deelnemer werden opgesloten. Ondanks hun scherpe tanden worden fretten "in het algemeen" onschadelijke, liefhebbende wezens genoemd. Het was populair bij mijnwerkers in Yorkshire. De winnaar is degene die de laatste de dieren vrijlaat. Het wereldrecord is vijf uur en dertig minuten. Ferret-legging zou zijn ontstaan in de tijd dat alleen de relatief rijke in Engeland toegestaan waren dieren te gebruiken voor de jacht. Stopers moesten dan hun illegale fretten in hun broek verbergen om niet betrapt te worden. "Ferret-legging" is een uitstervende sport, alhoewel van 2003 tot 2009 een nationaal ferret-legging-evenement werd gehouden in Richmond, Virginia.
