De steile, natte heuvels en de toegang tot belangrijke wolmarkten maakten Hebden Bridge ideaal voor waterkrachtweverijen, waardoor de stad zich in de 19e en 20e eeuw ontwikkelde. Hebden stond ooit zo bekend om zijn kledingproductie dat het de bijnaam "Broekstad" droeg. De wolhandel bracht ook het Rochdale-kanaal en de spoorlijn Manchester-Leeds met zich mee.
