Het slaperige stadje Aquileia was ooit een populaire bestemming voor velen die toegang tot de zee zochten. De eerste apostelen uit Jeruzalem zouden hier aan land zijn gegaan voordat ze het christendom over Europa verspreidden. De Amberstraat, onderdeel van het Romeinse wegennet, eindigt in Aquileia. Naast de ruïnes in Aquileia, die voor iedereen zichtbaar zijn gebleven, herbergt de stad ook het prachtige mozaïek in de Basiliek van Aquileia. Dit mozaïek dateert uit de tweede eeuw voor Christus en wordt beschouwd als het belangrijkste vroeg-Italiaanse vloermozaïek.
