In 1336 werd een jong meisje dat in het ziekenhuis S. Donnino of S. Lorenzo was opgenomen, op wonderbaarlijke wijze genezen van een langdurige ziekte, op voorspraak van de Heilige Maagd Maria. Na het wonder werd de ziekenzaal omgebouwd tot een oratorium; maar in de 15e eeuw werd er een nieuwe kerk voor in de plaats gebouwd, gewijd aan S. Maria delle Grazie, ook bekend als de Kerk van het Bed, omdat het bed van het miraculeuze meisje er bewaard is gebleven.
