Een analyse van stuifmeelkorrels uit Zuid-Amerika laat zien dat de Chicxulub-inslag mede verantwoordelijk was voor het ont-staan van de tropische regenwouden zoals we die nu kennen. Vóór de in-slag stonden de bomen in het tropische bos ver uit elkaar, waardoor het licht de bosbodem kon bereiken. Daarna groeiden ze veel dichter op el- kaar, wellicht als gevolg van het uitsterven van grote herbivoren; er kwam toen meer schaduw, en dat maakte de groei van groenten en peulvruchten mogelijk, die dankzij de interactie met bacteriën stikstof uit de lucht haalden.
