Overloon staat in de geschiedenis van Wereldoorlog II gekend voor "de slag om Overloon". Bij Overloon werd begin oktober 1944 één van de grootste tankslagen van Nederland uitgevochten tussen de 107e Duitse Pantserbrigade enerzijds en de 7e Amerikaanse en de 11e Britse Tankdivisie anderzijds. Vele dorpen in deze omgevind werden volledig vernield.
