De Waddeneilanden maken deel uit van een langgerekte eilandenreeks ten noorden van Nederland en Duitsland die doorloopt tot in Denemarken. Tussen de eilanden en het vaste land ligt de Waddenzee, die bij eb grotendeels droogvalt.
De Waddenzee toont hoe vroeger grote delen van Nederland, die nu achter dijken of duinengordels gelegen, er uit zagen. Het is nu een uniek fourageergebied voor vogels. Het grootste eiland is het Nederlandse Texel.
