L' església i el monestir de Santa Maria di Valverde o delle Giummare van ser fundats a principis del segle XII per la comtessa normanda Julieta, una famosa dama de Sciacca des de l'any 1100 fins al 1136, que va passar el seu temps lliure a prop del pou que porta el seu nom.
El nom " delle Giummare " deriva del tipus de palmera nana, anomenada localment " Gummara" .
A part del portal i la finestra central, que són barrocs, la resta recorda un castell medieval . L'església va trencar l'eix del monestir 'doble', habitat, segons permet el dret canònic, per monges i monjos cluniacens. Dues palmeres nanes creixen a banda i banda del portal en memòria del giummare (el nom saccens de les palmeres).
L'església conté obres d'art com llenços de Gaspare Testone de Saccia, pintures i frescos de Mariano Rossi.
Durant la guerra, el pare Michele Arena va recollir els fills trobats aquí i els va donar una llar.
