L' estàtua del Soldat Desconegut , a Lamego, va ser dissenyada per l'escultor Júlio Vaz Júnior i l'arquitecte Álvaro Machado.
Va ser inaugurat al setembre de 1932 .
Diu : "Pels morts de la Gran Guerra. Dies gloriosos".
Dels soldats que van sortir de Lamego , sabem que es van embarcar el 1917 i que van participar a la batalla del 9 d'abril a la zona del Lys . També van lluitar a Angola, com ho demostra el testimoni de familiars de Manuel da Piedade, nascut el 27 de juliol de 1893 a Britiande, Lamego, que es va allistar a l'exèrcit i va anar a Angola com a artiller, i que un soldat de Lamego anomenat José S. Vaz va morir a Moçambic el 4 de febrer de 1917.
El 9 d'abril de 1918, les tropes portugueses van viure un dels dies més foscos de la seva història, amb milers de baixes, a la batalla de La Lys, durant la Primera Guerra Mundial.
