Termen bruges af den Østrigske Alpin Klub i sin klassifikation af de Østlige Alper som en af de 24 underområder af de Nordlige Kalkalper.
De to individuelle toppe Grimming og Sarstein blev regnet som en del af Dachstein-området, fordi begge er brudt af Dachstein-kalkstenen, selvom de er ret adskilt fra et hydrografisk og orografisk perspektiv. Denne klassifikation dukkede op så tidligt som i 1924 i Moriggl Divisionen af Alperne.
