Navnet Meetjesland refererer til "meetjes": langstrakte parceller, der her forekommer i høj grad. Oprindelsen af disse langstrakte parceller er knyttet til udnyttelsen af området gennem tørvudvinding. Tørven blev udgravet via langstrakte striber.
En mere krydret etymologisk historie fortæller, at navnet "Meetjesland" stammer fra kejser Karl (Karl V). Han skulle have sagt, at der her var fyldt med "gamle meetjes", der henviste til de gamle kvinder. Af frygt for den umættelige seksuelle appetit skulle familierne have holdt deres døtre indendørs.
