Den, der er heldig og kommer på besøg i åbningstiderne for Turistkontoret i det tidligere rådhus på Markedet i Zottegem, kan få nøglen til krypten. I denne krypt under Vor Frue Himmelfarts Kirke, tilgængelig via en kuppel, ligger skeletterne af Lamoraal grev af Egmont og hans kone Sabina Van Beieren. “Andre historiske figurer får evig hvile i en sarkofag,” siger De Looze. “Her ligger parret åbent og bart. Unikt.” Egmont blev halshugget den 5. juni 1568 på den Store Marked i Bruxelles.
I Rådsalen i rådhuset hænger også det 19. århundredes maleri Les têtes coupées. “Til bueskyttersammenslutningen, som han var kejser for, havde Egmont bedt om, at hans lig blev ført til Zottegem efter hans død,” fortæller De Looze. “Og således skete det.”
