I 1996 udgjorde boliger og bygninger 12,8 % af det samlede areal, mens transportinfrastruktur udgjorde resten. Af det samlede ikke-produktive areal udgjorde vand 0,4 % af arealet. Pr. 2007 var 14,1 % af det samlede kommunale areal under en eller anden form for konstruktion.
Kommunen ligger i Reppischtal. Den inkluderer den lille landsby Landikon og adskillige spredte gårde. Landsbyen Birmensdorf inkluderer de tidligere landsbyer Wullikon, Schüren, Güpf, Uf Dorf og Risi.
