Blankenberg ligger i den sydlige del af Saale-Orla-Kreis, på det sted hvor Saale, der kommer fra Bayern, fortsætter sin vej gennem Thüringen, efter at have omstrømmet byen i en bue. Kommunen strækker sig langs en bjergkam. Angeren ligger i en højde af cirka 460 m over havets overflade, kirken ved 500 m over havets overflade og sportspladsen ved Galgenbühl ved 560 m over havets overflade.
Nabolandsbyer er Blankenstein, Harra og Pottiga i Saale-Orla-Kreis samt Issigau i den bayerske Landkreis Hof.
