Gotha er den femte største by i fristaten Thüringen og administrationsby i Landkreis Gotha. Gotha var fra 1640 til 1825 residensby for hertugdømmet Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg og fra 1826 hoved- og residensby for hertugdømmet Sachsen-Coburg og Gotha. I året 1820 blev det tyske forsikringssystem grundlagt i byen med Gothaer Versicherung. I Gothaer Tivoli blev den Socialdemokratiske Arbejderparti Tysklands stiftet i 1875, som senere ændrede navn til SPD. Byen var et centrum for den tyske forlagsbranche, så i forlaget Justus Perthes, grundlagt i 1785, blev der især udgivet kartografiske publikationer.
I fortiden var Gotha i konkurrence med Weimar, det andet centrum i den ernestinske dynasti. Mens Weimar blev det kunstneriske centrum, blev Gotha dets naturvidenskabelige pendant, hvilket blandt andet dokumenteres af Naturhistorisk Museum og Observatoriet i Gotha i dag. Det barokke slot Friedenstein dominerer bybilledet. Det var residens for hertugerne af Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg indtil 1825, og derefter for dem af Sachsen-Coburg og Gotha indtil 1918.
