Esche ligger ved Vechte mellem Nordhorn og Emlichheim. Kommunen tilhører fælleskommunen Neuenhaus, som har sin administrationssæde i byen Neuenhaus.
Bølgende nævnes første gang under sit oprindelige navn Aszi i et dokument fra år 1000. Der findes også oplysninger om den ældste bosættelse – huset Esche, også kaldet Oedinghof. Omkring 1411 kom bølgende til Veldhausen sogn.
