Hochemmerich med 17.943 indbyggere er en af de gamle bosættelseskernene i den 1934 dannede by Rheinhausen, som den 1. januar 1975 blev en del af Duisburgs bydel Rheinhausen.
I løbet af tiden ændrede betydningen af navnet Hochemmerich sig. Som sogn eksisterede Hochemmerich ca. siden år 900, som borgerskab.
