Bydelen blev officielt betegnet som Leithe før det blev indlemmet i Wattenscheid den 1. april 1926, og i skriftlige dokumenter kaldes det ofte også Westfälisch Leithe. En del af den opløste kommune blev omdelt til Gelsenkirchen. Ved indlemmelsen af Wattenscheid kom Leithe den 1. januar 1975 til Bochum. Det rheiniske Leithe ligger på den anden side af Leither Baches.
