Kommunen tilhører naturområdet Altmühlalb. Den geografiske midtpunkt i Bayern ligger cirka 500 m øst for landsbyen Kipfenberg ⊙. For 2000 år siden gik den romerske grænsemur Limes, nu verdensarv, gennem bymidten.
I området omkring landsbyen blev der fundet en hockergrav fra tiden 1800 til 1200 f.Kr. Den romerske grænsemur Limes krydsede Altmühltal der. I bydelen Böhming fandtes et romersk numeruskastel, der blev ødelagt af Alamannerne i 232/33 og opdaget og udgravet i 1898.
