Det Høje Fichtelgebirge er et skov- og bjergrigt bjergmassiv, der består af flere bjergkamme og som hesteskoformet omkranser Selb-Wunsiedler Højland. Naturrummæssigt repræsenterer det Høje Fichtelgebirge hovedenhed 394 inden for hovedenhedsgruppen Thüringisch-Fränkisches Mittelgebirge, der strækker sig fra Thüringer Wald til Fichtelgebirge.
Nordvest for hesteskoen er det kam af Waldsteingebirges, der ender mod sydvest ved Gefrees-Kornbach, med Großen Waldstein i centrum og massivet af Kornberg med den Store Kornberg mod nordøst.
