Det blev grundlagt i 744 af Sturmi på opdrag af Winfried Bonifatius i en Fulda-slette og var keimzellen for den senere by Fulda. Det blev indviet til den højhellige frelser. Bonifatius udnævnte Sturmius til den første abbed af klosteret.
Abbeyet var med sine ejendomme i løbet af sin historie som højstift Fulda også et åndeligt fyrstedom i det hellige romerske rige; de fuldanske abbeder bar fra 1220 titlen som fyrstabbe. Den undtagne abbey blev i 1752 hævet til fyrstebispedømmet af pave Benedikt XIV, før det i 1803 blev opløst med rigsdeputationshovedbeslutningen.
